Nail Extensions... |
| |
|
|
Nail extensions are the most commonly booked appointments. There are several types of nail extension services that we can provide for you in order for you to have the most unique and tailor-made service.
There are genuinely three types of nail extension products that are most commonly offered to our clients. Theses are liquid and powder, gel and fibre. It is important to understand that all of these products derive from the acrylic family; the only difference between the three systems is the way that products cure. |
|
| |
Types Of Extensions: Liquid & Powder… |
| |
Liquid and powder is the most popular nail enhancement system used in our salon. This product cures all ‘get harder’ by a natural process of the oxygen evaporating when the liquid and powder blends. This process takes up to 48 hours to get to the most durable state. You will find that your nails are incredibly strong and durable. Liquid and powder can be used to sculpture or build up onto the natural nail and correct irregular nail shapes, e.g. if your nail grows upwards it is possible to correct the nail shape by re-balancing with liquid and powder.
Liquid and powder is effective for the use of ‘nail bitters’ due to the ability to form nail shape, hardness, pliability and natural nail colour. Liquid and powder is most commonly known as acrylic nail extensions. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the use of acrylic nail enhancements, of which we would like to address. You may or not recall a recent documentary about ‘nail extensions’ featured on television. Watchdog featured a salon in the south-east region who provided acrylic nail extensions to a client. They apparently used a liquid and powder acrylic containing the controversial MMA product. MMA is an extremely dangerous, hard and controversial substance. MMA is most commonly used in the dental practice. It has also been used in the product of bullet proof glass and artificial limbs. This product has been banned in most states in America due to problems associated with MMA, however, this is used in nail salons in the UK.
At That Nail & Beauty Place we actively oppose to the use of MMA as this can damage the natural nail and can also possibly damage your health. You can protect yourself by using a reputable salon who holds credentials, e.g. NVQ qualifications etc, and by looking out for the following signs:
- Yellowing of the nails.
- Strong smelling odour emanating from the salon.
- Masks being worn by nail technicians.
- Electric, metal nail files being used on the natural nail.
- Poor sanitation.
- Cheaply priced nail enhancements.
- No insurance certification displayed.
- No qualifications displayed in the salon
Liquid and powder, when used by professionals, is the most perfect way to extend and protect the natural nail, providing that you listen to the advice of the technician when it comes to removal of the artificial nails. Liquid and powder is removed by submerging your nails in pure acetone for approximately 25 – 30 minutes. The product breaks down and goes into a gel-like formula and can be easily wiped away from the natural nail. We advise that you have a re-hydrating manicure after a ‘soak-off’ to return the natural nails to the best possible condition.
Usually liquid and powder extensions take approximately 1 – 1 ½ hours to complete. The average cost is £30 - £35. |
| |
Types Of Extensions: Gel... |
| |
UV gel is a product derived from the acrylic family. UV gel is an acrylic that cures or ‘gets harder’ when using an ultraviolet to accelerate this procedure. The UV lamp is a catalyst which makes the oxygen evaporate; thus making the gel hard and durable. UV gel has a high-gloss shine finish which is a tell tale sign. There are two types of gel that you can be used; bio gel and normal gel. Bio gel when coming to removal needs to be soaked off in acetone. Normal gel has to be manually filed off in order to return to the natural nail. This is an area of controversy – to soak or to file. Our personal recommendation is to use a bio gel. Soaking in acetone can dehydrate nails, but as long as a re-hydrating manicure is performed, damage is minimal. On the other hand, a non-bio gel cannot be removed by any other means than ‘filing off’. ‘Filing off’ poses a danger of filing onto the natural nail plate and damaging the nail.
At That Nail & Beauty Place we use a bio gel for clients wishing to have gel nail enhancements, and all of our technicians are trained in this procedure. The product again is the world renowned Creative bio sculpture gel, which is ‘low-odour’ and limits possible damage by being able to be soaked off in acetone.
Gel nail enhancements can be particularly useful to clients who are subjected to having their hands in water regularly, e.g. hair dressers, as the process ‘shrink raps’ to the natural nail making it water tight, making the product more durable. The high-gloss, wet-look finish is particularly appealing to clients wishing to show-off their nails, however, due to experience, the clients nails have to be in a reasonable condition to begin with as most gel products are quite transparent and can not disguise contra-indication/abnormalities on the nail plate.
Gel can be sculptured or built up for strength on nail extensions, but it is not as pliable as liquid and powder in our opinion. Gel is a premix formula that is painted onto the nail. The gel is quite sticky, but on application, levels by itself. This makes tress areas and nail shapes difficult to build up. Gel enhancements often take 1 – 2 hours to create due to the product having to be set by UV lamp. The cost is usually around £35 - £45 to be applied. |
| |
Types Of Extensions: Fibre... |
| |
‘Fibre’ or ‘Fibreglass enhancements’ can be used to extend or add strength to natural nails. The fibre system also derives from the acrylic family. The basic products used are a fibre - usually silk, cotton or nylon and a resin. The resin is set or accelerated using a chemical spray. This is how the fibre enhancement is ‘cured’ – accelerator spray speeds-up and heats the resin, thus making the fibre product hard and durable.
Fibre enhancements can be tricky and can take a relatively long time to produce. Most nail professionals will swear by fibre enhancements as a ‘repair tool’, but not as a product used to extend nails. This is due to the product being the most difficult to build up the stress areas, and can be the thinnest nail enhancement system. We discourage nail extensions with fibre, as in our opinion, the durability and the strength of nail extensions using fibre can be problematic.
Clients who have naturally ‘nice’ nails who need protection from everyday wear-and-tear, and who desire a thin and natural look to their nails, are often very satisfied with fibre nail enhancements.
Fibre is more commonly used as a repair system for natural nails, e.g. if you broke or snagged your natural nail, it is possible to repair like magic. No more catching in your hair or pulling on your clothing. You can often keep the length (depending on the break) and protect the nail you have without loosing the length of your natural nail.
Resin tends to be quite runny, and if the application is not accurate, it can spill or run onto the skin surrounding the nail. This can make the product ‘lift’. If resin spills onto the skin surrounding the nail, it can cause an allergy. The smell of the resin and ‘activator’ can be quite offensive to clients; therefore this is best practiced in well-ventilated areas.
Fibre extensions can be removed by soaking off using pure acetone which usually takes approximately 10 – 15 minutes to dissolve. An alternative to this is to manually file the fibre enhancements off of the nail. As mentioned earlier, the best way to return to the natural state of the nail to the best condition possible is to perform a re-hydrating afterwards. The cost of fibre extensions are usually £35 - £40.

When choosing a nail treatment it is imperative that a consultation is carried out. This way there are no misunderstandings about the service that you are about to receive. Any reputable salon will ask you to complete a client information card which will ask you about the service(s) that you require, your lifestyle, you medical history and your expectations etc. |
| |
|
| |
It is possible to extend the length of almost anybody’s nails – even the most accomplished ‘nail biter’. This is usually the cheapest method of extending nails. Tip extensions are applied onto the end of the natural nail. The tip is white (which needs no blending) and produces a semi-permanent French polish, or a natural nail tip is applied. The client then decides the length and the shape and finally gets to choose the preferred nail product e.g. - acrylic, gel or fibre. |
| |
Sculptured Nail Enhancements… |
| |
This is the good old fashioned way of providing nail enhancements. The most popular way of sculpturing nails is by using liquid and powder as this is the most pliable system. Sculptured nail enhancements can be made in one colour, pink and white or for the more adventurous clients various bright and bold colours can be used.
Sculptured nails are most commonly used with nail biters as the natural nail can be minimal in order for extensions to be completed. A form or a guide is applied to the free edge of the finger nail – the product is built-up and extended to the required length. Sculptured often claim to be the most durable, hardest and withstanding system. This is because the product is made to adhere to the natural nails, e.g. if you were having tip extensions, the weakest point (the point most likely to break) would be the tip as this is made from plastic. This is the most common area of breakage. Sculptured nails can be produced in liquid and powder and also gel.

Clients can protect and strengthen their natural nails by having an overlay or wrap. The attraction of this enhancement service is that the client not only gets to keep their natural nails, but also has the advantage of extra protection from everyday wear-and-tear.
Nails can be wrapped in liquid and powder, gel or fibre, depending on the client’s needs of lifestyle. As with any extension or wrap, the extra bonus is that the client’s nail polish will not chip.
Regardless of which system the client chooses, the nail polish will remain without chipping and wearing until the product is removed or a re-balance is performed.

Natural Nail Care… |
| |
Clients who are gifted with great and healthy natural nails can also treat themselves with a manicure. This classic treatment can be enjoyed by anyone. Cuticles are tided, nails are shaped, and hands are exfoliated and re-hydrated. You can sit back and enjoy a hand and arm massage, followed by the perfect nail paint. Whether you have a perfectly polished French manicure or a full colour, you can be sure that your manicure is completed with the best attention to detail. Manicures usually take up to 45 minutes to perform, depending on the individual client and the desired nail finish. |
| |
Nail Decoration – the finish |
| |
Clients may choose how the finished look is achieved depending on the occasion. There are many different looks available. |
| |
Shape… |
| |
Depending on the shape and length of your fingers, there are different nail shapes that suit different clients. For a younger and modern shape, clients often choose to have their nails shaped with a squarer appearance. Oval or rounded nails are often said to compliment and elongate the look of the nail, giving a more feminine appearance. |
| |
Polish or Enamel… |
| |
When deciding on the finished look, you can choose a full colour polish, a French polish (white tips), American polish, Air brushed nail art or freehand nail art – the choice is yours! Nail enamel of all varieties lasts remarkably on all types of artificial nail enhancements, but not on natural nails. It is useful to remember that if you’re having nail art, you may have to live with a design for up to four weeks – so choose wisely! |
